Suggestion
Hello there,
My name is Danielle Moore and this is my second semester attending Scottsdale Community College. I am a very environmental person and I love how there are recycling bins around campus. Too much plastic is wasted by people who just through bottles away but since we have recycling bins available on campus students and teachers do it!! :) I wanted to possibly suggest maybe putting a seperate trash can in the class rooms for just paper. And even adding more bins around campus for other items that are recyclable instead of just aluminum cans and plastic bottles. I ride my bike around campus and end up picking up a lot of newspaper, possibly adding another bin for paper and other recyclable items would eliminate that? :) Just a suggestion.
Thank you very much for your time in reading this!!
Danielle Moore

I'm a former student at SCC and now the Campus Recycling Coordinator at MCC. I love SCCs campus. I just want to say KUDOS to Thomas Williams and all the people who support SCCs commitment to become a Greener Campus. Recycling is only the beginning. It's the volunteers and people dedicated to doing what's right for the environment that will lead us towards a more sustainable future! Excellent Work, SCC!

increase class offerings on sustainability, green design, edible gardens in the desert, develop a dept devoted to the environment, solar, green investing, energy efficient practices, etc. The public wants to learn. Congrats on your new efforts to green the campus. I added sccgreen to my blog!

I moved here from California, where we had a recycling truck pick up our recycled products once a week. Out here I have felt crazy for throwing cans and water bottles away, I would love to be able to bring my recycled things (in large quantities) to the campus to drop off to have recycled. If there is any way I can help make this happen, let me know!

Thanks,
Katie McMonegal

I'm so happy you guys have gone green! In the future it would be so awesome if more foods in the cafeteria could be organic and/or healthier, and maybe one day even start composting!

I will be taking classes at the SCC campus through NAU's distance learning masters program this spring semester. I also am involved with a green certified local business, Pro-Cleaners Program, who offers sustainable laundry; I thought that both Pro-Cleaners Program's and SCC's missions are complementary of each other. Information about the services can be found on the company website: www.procleanersprogram.com. Please let me know what you think about working together on making SCC even greener, and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you for your time hard work with green solutions.

a great investment to green power sources, a la solar energy. I have noticed the solar panel on the science building, but considering it is only one, it is not enough

I am part of the film program at scottsdale community college and we recently had to create a 60 second PSA or commercial and i made mine on recycling. I just showed it in class and people love it. I showed many of my friends and family and they think it is really well made. They like it so much they tell me to play it again. If you are interested, contact me and i'll be happy to show you what I have.

SCC teaches two equine science courses at Horses Help in North Phoenix. We are looking for some help on Community education with regards to our urban farm model. This includes Rainwater collection, composting, horticulture, and solar projects. Our initial phase of placement of an educational component (rainwater collection cistern grant recieved), compostng an solar area are ready to go for application. We are looking for interested green groups like SCC to get involved. We are working with Hometown solutions and other groups to make this incredible project happen.
Please contact Gregg for more information on the execution and development timelines.

I am a parent of a student attending SCC. Other colleges and universities allow me to make tuition payments online. SCC still only uses snail mail. Isn't it time that SCC entered the modern age and sets up an online site where one can view and pay their student accounts instead of using paper and envelopes?

Hello, I am working with a program called Arizona Project WET for middles school student in and around the Phoenix area. We are looking for groups interested in volunteering with this program. We have a variety of dates and opportunities. If there are any dates below that would work for your group - it would be great to work together with this great program!

I am also available to present this information to your club(s). Would you like to set up a time to discuss this further?

Best Wishes,

Scottsdale Community College has been using a very energy inefficient and outdated trash compacting system. Our trash compactor is almost a decade old and is a very inefficient model. SCC has somewhere between 40-60 trash cans and recycling bins. The trash is compacted and hauled away weekly while the recycling is done as needed. If we switched to solar powered trash compactors the savings would come out to about 400k over 10 years. The compactors will pay for themselves in only 3-4 years and we would be reducing our carbon emissions by 20-40 tons annually. Schools all over the country have implemented this including ASU and the savings can already be seen. They reduced pickup rates by 50%, CO2 emissions by 20% and total costs by 30%. The city of Philadelphia has cut its total costs from 2.1 million to 700k. Its time SCC took the initiative and switch to solar power.
